The grade, the ground underneath, is dug and compacted to a certain height with footers around the perimeter. A vapor barrier is placed between the grade and the pour to protect the finished floor from moisture, then a wire mesh is placed on top of that and suspended to stay center of the concrete pour. The wire mesh is used to minimize cracking and settling within the drying concrete.
